Porcelain Doll

Much like any other family heirloom a porcelain doll should be treated carefully and kept in the best condition possible if not for the financial value then for the purely ascetic value as you place the doll in a safe but prominent place to display it. However no matter how hard you and those family members who came before you have tried accidents do happen and damage can be done especially to a porcelain dolls face. While you could try to fix the damage done to your porcelain doll chances are that you will end up causing more damage than was originally done. To repair porcelain of any kind whether it is a doll, a cup or a plate take special talents and tools that are very hard to come by any more. These skills slowly died out as more and more products began to be made in factories of more durable but inferior materials.

These repairs can be quite expensive but if you want your doll to look as good as new you are going to have to be prepared to pay the price. Repairing the face of a porcelain doll is one of the most difficult repairs to perform due to its incredibly delicate nature. Because it is so delicate in nature chips and cracks are quite common and show quite prominently as the surface is usually very white and hard to keep clean making the chips and cracks show up much worse than they might on other porcelain items. Even uglier can be repairs that have been done over the years by someone who did not know what they were doing or lacked the fine skills needed to do a perfect repair. All of this can only reduce the value of the doll to your collection. An expert will examine the crack or chip in your porcelain doll to see just how deep it is before he attempts to repair it. Often the damage is deeper than it looks and calls for some very special tools and skills to repair it so that it is not visible.

The crack or chip may be carefully filled with and invisible glue to seal it so the face or head can be refinished. Once dry the expert will use glazes to refinish the damaged area and then properly clean the rest of the doll to make it look as new as possible, restoring its value in your collection. Part of the reason many of these dolls show signs of wear and tear is that the porcelain doll was used by many little girls as a toy and as such may not have received the best of care. With a little care and attention from an expert in cleaning and repair your doll can look almost as good as the day it was created. Today the collectible porcelain doll is still being made the old fashioned way by a few select artisans. Yolanda of Yolis Dolls is hand crafting a unique collection of Persian dolls designed to represent the many tribes that inhabited Persia complete with the appropriate tribal clothing. Each doll is certified unique and comes with a custom story about its origins and a wooden display stand.
